About Wenzhou Medical University

Wenzhou Medical University (WMU) is a key institution of higher learning under the direct leadership of Zhejiang Provincial Government. It can trace its origin back to the former Zhejiang Specialized Medical School established in 1912. WMU is listed in World Directory of Medical Schools complied by WHO.

At present, the total number of full-time students at WMU is 18,239, including 4001 postgraduate students and 302 doctorate students. WMU has more than 14,000 faculty and staff, including academic appointments of the affiliated hospitals, and over 1800 of them hold senior professional titles. The main campus of the university has 1609 full time teachers.

WMU started its five–year undergraduate programs in 1958 and master’s programs in 1978, making it one of the first institutions in China authorized to confer master’s degree and doctor’s degree. WMU has 4 national featured programs: clinical medicine, optometry & ophthalmology, medical laboratory, and pharmacy. The minimum qualifying scores to be enrolled by WMU for Science programs ranked the 1st among provincial universities in Zhejiang. According to ESI (2018), the chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology, biology and biochemistry of WMU ranked world's top 1%; clinical medicine ranked top 0.2%. In the Chinese Doctor’s License Examination, average score and passing rate of WMU graduates are constantly within the top 10% among all medical programs in China.

School of International Studies

WMU founded School of International Studies in April of 2006 with its primary education and academic degrees taught in English. WMU became one of the authorized universities to recruit overseas students for medical education.

With academic admission from around the globe, WMU boasts about1000 full-time foreign students from over 70 countries expanded across continent of Asia, Africa, Europe, America, and Oceania, as well as more than 100 short-term foreign exchange students from various countries in the world.
